Welcome to the 3rd Scandinavian Update on Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine in Stavanger April 23-25, 2009. Following the successes in 2005 and 2007, Stavanger is again the arena for the only multidisciplinary Scandinavian conference on trauma, resuscitation and emergency Medicine in its broadest sense.
Hot topics; Resuscitation and prognostication, Re-organisation of emergency medical services, Advanced airway management, Neurotrauma, Stabbings and shootings - how big is the problem in Scandinavia, CRM (Crisis and Crew Resource Management) and simulation.
The conference venue is the same as before; Clarion Hotel Stavanger close to the inner harbour in the charming city centre of Stavanger, not far from the famous Lysefjorden and Preikestolen/The Pulpit Rock. Due to the international oil business, the hotel capacity in Stavanger is stretched to the limit. Therefore, you should register today and make a reservation for the hotel.
With ample time to meet friends and colleagues and enjoy the social program and the sight-seeing, we can only say: welcome to Scandinavian Update 2009!

Following the successes in 2005 and 2007, it is a pleasure to welcome you back to the 3rd Scandinavian Update on Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine in Stavanger, April 23-25, 2009.
Similar to before there will be a mixture of Update lectures, Hot Topic session, Pro-Con debates and now also Case discussion sessions where you can discuss management of real patients with the experts.
One definitive “hot topic” is the total re-organisation of both in-hospital and out-of-hospital emergency care that takes place in the Scandinavia countries just now. With input from all the Scandinavian countries, we will discuss how this will affect the hospital structure, the various medical and surgical specialists involved and the pre-hospital system. You should not miss this opportunity to interact with the decision-makers in Scandinavia!
Emergency medicine as a new speciality is another “hot topic”. What is happening in Sweden and Denmark and what will Finland and Norway do? Did anyone, by the way, ask about the experience from Iceland?
Early, aggressive resuscitation is certainly good for the patient in cardiac arrest, but when is it time to stop? This is an important question as we are stretching the limits and achieving improved outcome with new technology and new guidelines. Further, why does the rest of the world think chest-compression-only resuscitation is better than the European approach with both chest compression and rescue breaths?
Trauma care is often focused on the bleeding trauma patient, but the no. 1 killer is neurotrauma. Is there a difference between how Scandinavia and the rest of Europe organise neurotrauma and neurointensive care, and does this affect outcome? Are we really sure we provide optimal pre-hospital care, including endotracheal intubation and controlled ventilation, to those who desperately need it? And what about penetrating trauma outside the few large, urban hospitals in Scandinavia? How big is the problem and can we save more patients?
These and more topics will be brought to your attention at the meeting. We think we have succeeded in making Scandinavian Update the mandatory meeting point for all Scandinavian doctors, nurses and paramedics involved with treating medical emergencies inside and outside the hospital. You will find a good mixture of international and Scandinavian guests in the multi-speciality faculty. So please join us, meet your colleagues, as well as the decision makers and experts in your field of interest, and help shape the future of trauma care, resuscitation and emergency medicine in Scandinavia.
The conference venue is the same as before; Clarion Hotel Stavanger close to the inner harbour in the charming city centre of Stavanger, not far from the famous Lysefjorden and Preikestolen/The Pulpit Rock.
Welcome to Scandinavian Update 2009!
