Discover why the National Geographic Traveller recently ranked Norwegian fjords as the number one travelling destination in the world, and why Stavanger was chosen the European Cultural Capital for 2008.
Stavanger is located at the South-Western coast of Norway close by the sea and just as close to fjords, forests and mountains. The nightlife in Stavanger is perhaps the best in all of Norway, and there are plenty of good restaurants that serve food for all tastes and wallets.
The area round Stavanger was one of the first to be inhabited in Norway. The history of the city of Stavanger begins in 1125 with the building of the cathedral. It is still standing, in a city which has grown into Europe’s biggest city of wooden-houses. The city centre with the Inner Harbor is intimate, with lot of tempting shops and green areas. But, you don't have to go far before you come upon wilder and lush natural surroundings.
