The Axel Cappelen Award for Excellence in Trauma
The Norwegian surgeon Axel H. Cappelen (1858-1919) was the first to attempt surgical suture of a cardiac stab wound in 1895. Cappelen, then a surgical resident at the National Hospital in Oslo, later moved to Stavanger, where he served as consultant and chief surgeon for the remainder of his career. Multi-talented and devoted to surgery and patient care he did not only train some of the leading Norwegian surgeons of his time, but played a central role in design, construction and planning of the Stavanger Municipal Hospital during the early 1900s – now risen to the ranks of a University Hospital.
